Zwolle is beautiful. The ancient architecture with roofs I have never seen before makes me feel like I am living in the middle ages and I am lucky enough to be living in one of these gorgeous houses. Moving to Zwolle and starting to settle into this new life has got me questioning our plans. How will we be able to downsize from what we have now to a tiny house? How will we store things we may collect over the year?
Looking at the pile of bags and suitcases, we are amazed at how much stuff we have accumulated even living out of a suitcase the first two weeks of the Netherlands. Stuff! That is exactly what it is.
I find myself asking why I decided to go down this path with Marije. I am very passionate about fairness and equality, poverty bothers me a lot. And in this materialistic society where everyone is chasing the American dream with the motto “bigger is better”, bigger houses and expensive cars, when there are millions living in absolute poverty, I remember the path I have chosen is a very noble one by saying ‘No, actually less is more’. So yes, I still want to do tiny.
But I guess there is a good compromise. Although we won’t live in a big beautiful mansion, we can still surround ourselves with beauty. A tiny house in the big city? And if we get tired of the city, we move our house into nature. To me, this sounds like the best of both worlds.
